The Sanders Firm, P.C.: New York NYCERS Lawyer
In New York City, The Sanders Firm, P.C. offers services in all areas of civil service law, including representation for issues in relationship to the New York City Employees’ Retirement System (NYCERS). NYCERS contains the retirement plans, medical benefits, and other programs that are available to all New York City employees who were hired on or after July 27, 1976.
Background of NYCERS
All New York City employees may be members of NYCERS except for those who are entitled to participate in the New York City Teachers’ Retirement System, the New York City Police Pension Fund, the New York City Fire Department Pension Fund, or the New York City Board of Education Retirement System. In 1920, NYCERS was created by an act of the New York State Legislature. The system oversees and administers retirement benefits for most employees of New York City. The head of the retirement system is the Board of Trustees and the Custodian of the funds of the System is the Comptroller of the City of New York. The Comptroller may invest funds per delegation of the NYCERS’ Board of Trustees.
Your Benefits
If you have a benefits claim that is being denied by NYCERS, it is important to seek qualified legal representation. As with other areas of civil service law, NYCERS is a complex system that demands those who file petitions and appeals through the system understand how NYCERS works.
For NYCERS, the Office of the Corporation Counsel provides legal services to the system, and an independent Medical Board reporting to the Board of Trustees conducts examinations of members who file for disability retirement and makes determinations regarding their ability to perform their job duties.
Decisions regarding your benefits are very much in the hands of both of these NYCERS’ entities. Your rights, benefits, and plans are precious commodities that you must guard, and when you feel that you are denied some benefit or program to which you are entitled, it is important to file an appeal as soon as possible.
